Couples that agree to be committed without marriage?

My boyfriend and I have been together for awhile and have discussed the views on this topic many times. We are both in agreement that we do not feel the need to be married to have a committed relationship. We both have friends that are married and very not happy in the current relationship and we do not want to be like them or become another statistic.

I have talked to others regarding our decision and most do not understand our views on not wanting to be married. I just wanted to know if anyone else knows of couples that are doing this and how well it is working for them. We are happy with our decision about our future...just wanted some views and opinions from other readers to see how they feel. Good or bad points welcomed.Couples that agree to be committed without marriage?
the downside of just being a committed couple is that you have no legal protections if either of you should die, from the parasitic relatives that show up to pick apart the remains of their relatives estate. You may also run into issues over insurance and status of children with different last names than their mother/father, not to mention social impact on children called names by peers or relatives.

obviously, the crux of the issue is your apparent misconception that a piece of paper has the power to destroy your happiness ...

what you really are trying to avoid is a legally binding contract to insure your commitment so that neither of you is accountable in the event that you decide to move on,

you can satisfy that with a prenuptual agreement so that both of you waive any claim to personal property brought into the relationship and agree to divide any joint property 50-50 while retaining the right to inherit the spouse's property in the event either dies
